Power-to-Liquid

Power-to-Liquid (PtL) technology converts renewable electricity into liquid fuels and offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. In the first step, water is split into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂) through electrolysis using exclusively renewable electricity. The resulting hydrogen is then combined with carbon dioxide (CO₂), which is either captured from industrial emissions or directly removed from the atmosphere using Direct Air Capture technologies. Through catalytic synthesis processes such as Fischer–Tropsch synthesis or methanol synthesis, a synthetic intermediate is produced that can subsequently be refined into fuels such as kerosene. These fuels are considered nearly carbon-neutral because their combustion releases only the CO₂ that was previously captured. PtL technology therefore contributes to replacing fossil energy carriers and reducing dependence on crude oil. Current challenges include high production costs and the substantial energy demand of electrolysis. Nevertheless, PtL is regarded as one of the most promising solutions for drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions in aviation. With increasing scale and supportive policy frameworks, these synthetic fuels could play a key role in the global energy transition.

Our Power-to-Liquid Projects

Power-to-Liquid-Plant Werlte

Status: Implemented
Plant has been certified according to the fairfuel standard, and the first product volumes have been successfully produced.

With our plant in Werlte, located in the Emsland region of Germany, we made history in 2021. It was the world’s first facility integrated into an industrial environment capable of producing synthetic crude oil for kerosene production. At the Werlte site, we use regional renewable electricity from wind and solar power, CO₂ from a neighboring biogas plant, and water as feedstocks. The synthetic crude oil can then be further processed into aviation fuel in conventional refineries. However, we are still facing technical challenges with key supplier components and have so far produced only limited quantities of synthetic crude oil. The quality of the crude oil also has not yet reached the desired level. We are currently evaluating possible options for the future of the site.

eMethanol in Africa and Southamerica

Status: In Concept Development
Sites have been identified and technology providers selected.

Together with an experienced technology provider specializing in methanol synthesis from green hydrogen and CO₂, we are currently developing concepts for a pilot plant for the production of e-methanol. Several countries in Africa and South America already generate more than 90% of their electricity from renewable energy sources. In addition, there are local sources where biogenic CO₂ can be captured and utilized as a by-product of existing industrial processes, as well as emerging start-ups working in the field of Direct Air Capture technologies. From our perspective, these conditions provide an ideal foundation for the production of e-methanol. We are currently in discussions with several strong project partners interested in building and operating a first plant with our support. We are also seeking off-takers for the first volumes of green methanol, as well as strong partners capable of supplying biogenic CO₂.
