Syngas Platform Vienna

Solarbelt is an industrial partner of the COMET K1 Center BEST 4.0 and is therefore at the forefront of advancing Biomass-to-Liquid technology. At BEST’s Syngas Platform in Vienna, a wide range of residual materials and biomass feedstocks can be converted into hydrogen-rich synthesis gas, which can then be transformed directly on-site into fuels through various catalytic synthesis processes. The Syngas Platform is the first facility of its kind worldwide to demonstrate this technology in a single, fully integrated process chain.

Solarbelt can use this industrial-scale facility to convert biomass into synthetic crude oil via the BtL pathway, enabling us and our project partners to take the first step in assessing the feasibility of specific biomass feedstocks from the Global South.

In 2023 and 2024, we used the Syngas Platform to successfully produce synthetic crude oil from 25 tonnes of cashew nut shells sourced from Côte d’Ivoire and from 20 tonnes of coconut shells from Indonesia. This synthetic crude oil has since even been refined into kerosene. Both achievements represent world firsts. Through these projects, we demonstrated that these biomass residues are highly suitable feedstocks for BtL technology.
